Overview

Situated in Southeast London, the sculptor's house is a unique design that addresses the challenges posed by its location, nestled between old terraced townhouses and a service route. The site, once occupied by abandoned garages, has been effectively utilized to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing dwelling. The north façade, facing the predominant service route, features a distinctive design element created using Building Information Modelling (BIM). A wood wave, composed of vertically oriented planks, serves as a barrier and provides privacy for the house. Breaking the flow of the wood wave is a steel curtain door framed in concrete, adding a sculptural element to the façade.

The house's layout has been thoughtfully designed to meet the practical needs of the client. The ground floor consists of an open space incorporating a kitchen, living room, WC, utility room, and a separate workshop visually connected to the living room. The garden area offers a comfortable seating area, bespoke BBQ, and Pizza oven. Natural light fills the stair area through a glass roof located on the north edge of the staircase.

On the second floor, two bedrooms and a bathroom are provided. The south façade features floor-to-ceiling windows, maximizing natural light intake and offering expansive views of the surrounding green areas. The main roof is proposed as a green roof, serving both as an aesthetically pleasing feature visible from taller buildings and as a sustainable roofing solution. The material palette chosen for the house emphasizes simplicity, efficient construction, and a high-quality surface finish. The main external envelope comprises precast concrete panels, while the internal structure utilizes Cross Timber Laminate (CTL) for the walls, ceilings, stairs, and beams. This selection ensures a durable and visually appealing result.

Overall, the sculptor's house is a well-designed and carefully considered project that integrates functionality, privacy, and aesthetics in response to the site's unique context.
